Summary

Arthur Rudolf Hantzsch (1857–1935) was one of the most famous representatives of organic und general chemistry of his time. He hold the important tenures of chemistry in Zürich (ETH), Würzburg and Leipzig. A. Hantzsch was the first prominent German organic chemist who integrated the physicochemical concepts and methods of the newly developed ionic-osmotic theory of solution into his work. Therefore he must be regarded as an important pioneer of the new hybrid discipline of physical organic chemistry which constituted itself in the second third of the 20th century.

Wilhelm Ostwald (1853–1932), since 1887 professor of physical chemistry in Leipzig, was one of the founders of modern physical chemistry. Besides he was the most important pioneer of catalysis research and nobel laureat in 1909.

This book contains an edition of the corresponcence of W. Ostwald und A. Hantzsch from 1887 to 1927. Beyond this the introductory chapters shed light on important aspects of the development of science, especially of modern physical chemistry, around 1900. The subsequent parts draw a portrait of the private person and the chemist Arthur Hantzsch.
